Can Brushing Your Teeth Keep Them Clean

In the article two weeks ago, you must have understood why you should brush twice a day, in the morning and before going to bed at night. In last week's article, we saw that since the mouth is an integral part of the body, it is important to maintain its health. Keeping your mouth clean can be considered an important part of maintaining your overall health. For this, brushing twice a day, choosing the right brush and toothpaste, replacing the brush every two months, flossing, cleaning your tongue, and visiting your dentist once a year are the best ways to maintain oral health. But is brushing as easy as we think?

The awareness of some sections of society towards oral hygiene is very commendable. Some of my patients are also those who do not even scratch their teeth. They believe that brushing with hard pressure can keep the teeth clean. For this, they sometimes use "hard bristle" brushes, which in my opinion can be called a very harmful choice. Brushing with such misconceptions does more harm than good to the teeth and gums. Such people often experience tooth sensitivity.

One of the reasons behind the damage to teeth and gums is the wrong way of brushing your teeth and choosing the wrong brush. The harder you brush, the more the outer covering of the teeth - the enamel - and the gums are worn away. Due to prolonged wear and tear, the teeth will get pitted and the sensitive parts of the teeth will be exposed due to the gums being pulled down. Ultimately, this becomes the main cause of toothache. Apart from this, the chances of food getting stuck in such teeth or getting decay also increase a lot.

So what is the best way to brush? Today we will understand the correct way to brush. In my opinion, "brushing should be done gently, lightly but thoroughly". Of course, one should consult a dentist for individual needs, but in general, we recommend using a soft-bristled toothbrush. Place the brush at a 45-degree angle at the junction of the teeth and gums so that half of it is on the gums and the other half is on the teeth, and then rub it on each tooth with small circular strokes. Gently move the brush towards the front and back teeth. Make sure to brush the outside and inside of all the teeth. Brush twice a day and don't forget to clean your tongue. While brushing, look at your teeth in the mirror and brush for two full minutes.

If you are using an electric toothbrush, the cleaning method is not that complicated. Instead of pressing on it, just keep it in contact with your teeth and rub it back and forth and on the inside and outside of each tooth. To ensure that you do not wear your teeth with too much pressure, try to hold the toothbrush in your non-dominant hand (left hand for the left hand). It is advisable to divide your mouth into four quadrants and brush for 30 seconds in each quadrant. For this, you can use a timer on your phone or an electric toothbrush. Following these tips will also reduce the tingling sensation in your teeth to some extent and you will be able to keep your teeth clean and your mouth healthy.
