What is a Root Canal?
RCT is popularly referred to the treatment of nerves. RCT is the broadly used treatment used to save natural tooth .Our teeth have three layers. The upper layer/part which is visible to us is called Crown ( Enamel) , this layer is stronger than the bones , under this next layer is Dentin and the last layer which is connected to the roots of the teeth is called Pulp which is a soft tissue. This tissue contains blood vessels, nerves, and connective tissue, which help grow the root of your tooth during its development. A fully developed tooth can survive without the pulp because the tooth continues to be nourished by the tissues surrounding it.
As we grow older, sometimes the tooth pulp canal areas can have caries go into them - which is why root canal treatment is done. The tooth’s nerve is housed within the pulp, so when the damage or decay reaches the pulp layers of the tooth, the result is a severe toothache or dental sensitivity.
Why is it used?
Root canal therapy is used to remove the damaged pulp and nerve system, relieve tooth pain, and fully renew oral health. In addition to relieving the pain and sensitivity experienced by most patients, root canal therapy allows us to save a tooth that may otherwise need to be extracted.
Saving the natural tooth with root canal treatment has many advantages:
1. Efficient chewing
2. Normal biting force and sensation
3. Natural appearance
4. Protects other teeth from excessive wear or strain
What’s the procedure?
RCT is a multi-step procedure and it usually takes 1-2 sittings , but can take longer based on the condition of the tooth and the level of infection .
XRAY : An XRAY of your affected / infected teeth is taken to determine the cause of your pain and the extent of the decay. Local anesthesia is injected into your teeth to numb the teeth and to ensure you have a painless procedure .
Removal of decay and making a cavity : The next step is the removal of all the visible carries and decays and making a cavity in the tooth to get access to the inner pulp .
Removal of infected pulp : The infected / inflamed pulp is removed completely.
Cleaning , disinfecting and preparing the canals: Once the infected pulp has been removed the canals are then disinfected using saline solution . Cleaned canals are prepared to fill with filling material.
Seal the canals : In some cases, the canals can be sealed with the rubber-based material in the same sitting itself . Such treatment is called “Single -sitting root canal. However, most cases require a gap of 3-5 days before the canals get permanently sealed. During this period the dentist places a calcium-based medication to allow the inflamed tissue to heal.
Post root canal filling and crown: Once the canals have been sealed, it’s time to restore the decayed crown part of your tooth using tooth filling material. Lastly, a tooth crown is shaped for the placement of a cap that will strengthen the tooth.
Getting a root canal is relatively painless and extremely effective. You’ll be back to smiling, biting, and chewing with ease in no time.
