Mucormycosis A Rare But Deadly Infection Of The Jaw

After the unlock, some patients have suddenly noticed a dramatic increase in the incidence of tooth loosening and oral and jaw diseases. Recently, dentists have been surprised to see the increase in cases of jaw bone infection, especially due to Mucor fungus, and the increased death rate due to it. Upon further investigation, it was found that such symptoms have been seen more especially in patients who have undergone corona treatment. Let us understand some basic things to understand why this might have happened to them.

Corona infection was a new topic for scientists and doctors around the world. Day by day, the recognition of the disease increased and with it, changes were also seen in the treatment protocol. On one hand, most of the patients got better with medicine alone, while on the other hand, many people lost their relatives due to Corona. The decrease in immunity due to Corona could be an important reason for this.

On the other hand, the mortality rate was higher in patients with comorbidities! Because patients with old age, uncontrolled diabetes (especially in patients with ketoacidosis), blood cancers like lymphoma and leukemia, kidney failure and dialysis patients, organ transplant patients or those taking long-term immunosuppressive drugs, liver cirrhosis, skin burns, malnutrition and AIDS patients already have a weak immune system. It is impossible to imagine how much it can be reduced due to corona in patients with such comorbidities!

When a doctor has a life-threatening situation, the only option is to ignore the side effects of treatment. Such immunocompromised patients treated with steroids are at increased risk of developing infections such as tuberculosis, candidiasis, and mucormycosis, and of developing diseases such as diabetes and osteoporosis.

Those who believe that once I have corona, nothing will happen to me anymore, be careful. Of all the infections mentioned above, “mucormycosis” can be considered a rare but deadly and opportunistic infection. It is caused by a fungus called mucor which is found in fruits, soil, dust and manure. It usually circulates in the body of a healthy person but does not harm him. This infection affects only 2 out of 1 lakh people (who have very low immunity) every year, with a mortality rate of about 50% and all the remaining patients are left with permanent disabilities! In such patients, the mucor fungus enters the body through the mouth and nose and spreads very aggressively to the brain and lungs.

Early diagnosis and aggressive surgical treatment with appropriate antifungal therapy can reduce the mortality rate in patients. In my opinion, it is wise to take a little precaution rather than waiting for things to get so bad. Do not ignore dental problems. If your teeth start moving prematurely, definitely visit your dentist. It is wrong for patients who have undergone treatment for Corona and have comorbidities to hide their details. Please provide every detail about the treatment you have received in the recent past and the treatment you are currently undergoing to the dentist.

You can take good diet, zinc and vitamin medicines and Ayurvedic decoctions to build immunity. Exercise. The elderly and people with comorbidities should go out in public only if it is absolutely necessary. Always wear a mask. Be a stickler for cleanliness. There is nothing more important than surviving corona, but it is imperative for patients who have recovered from its infection to take extra care instead of just walking around.
