Diseases like pyorrhea, high blood pressure and diabetes are conditions that are managed, not cured. The only type of gum disease that can be cured is gingivitis. In the early stages, it can be reversed with scaling treatment by a dentist and good oral care at home. But if you go too long between dental visits or fail to clean properly, gingivitis will return.
Depending on the severity of the condition, different types of treatment are used. In the early stages, a special cleaning of the gums is done without opening them, which is called “root planing”. In many patients, this can avoid gum surgery. Note that at this stage, regular cleaning (scaling) of the teeth may not cure the condition. In such severe cases, treatment by a gum disease specialist called a periodontist may be required.
If treatment is still delayed, the calculus trapped inside the gums is surgically removed to prevent the tooth from falling out. In advanced pyorrhea, some teeth may also have to be extracted and new bone may have to be created using bone powder. The fallen tooth can be fixed with a dental implant after 3 months.
The longer you prolong the problem, the more difficult and expensive it becomes to treat. Although pyorrhea can be treated in this way, a permanent cure is possible only if the patient maintains very good oral hygiene, gives up bad habits, and visits their dentist regularly throughout their lives.
The good news is that preventing gum disease is easy and inexpensive, and it can even save your natural teeth! The best way to do this is to have your periodontist check you on a regular basis (at least once a year) so they can clean your teeth and gums if needed. At home, brush twice daily and floss between your teeth once.
Remember that preventing gum disease in the first place is the "best cure."
