Interdental cleaning

According to the World Dental Federation (FDI), the definition of oral health encompasses many important issues, such as; it includes the ability to speak, smile, smell and taste, feel the touch of food, chew and swallow it, and express various emotions with confidence through facial expressions. Considering this definition, oral health is an undeniable part of enjoying disease-free health and living a well-being life. Perhaps we underestimate its importance and our habit of taking everything for granted will go away only after bitter experiences!

“Dental plaque” is a sticky biofilm of bacteria that constantly forms on your teeth and between them. It must be removed regularly, otherwise it can cause gum disease, tooth decay and bad breath. Oral diseases are increasingly being linked to high blood pressure, diabetes, indigestion and obesity. Dentists, based on scientific research and clinical experience, always recommend a “health-promoting approach”. There is no doubt that this requires maintaining proper oral hygiene.

Now, perhaps, the importance of removing dental plaque for maintaining general health is better understood by people. In the articles so far, we have seen the things to keep in mind while choosing a brush and paste. We have also understood the correct method for brushing our teeth. But is that enough? No, you have just learned to drive a car, but we will become experts in it now. Brushing alone removes 60% of plaque, while interdental brushes and toothbrushes together are capable of removing up to 95% of dirt.

“Interdental cleaning” means cleaning the spaces between your teeth. Your toothbrush only cleans the inside, outside, and chewing surfaces of your teeth; but don’t skip cleaning the spaces between your teeth! Using an interdental brush daily is a great alternative to flossing. Flossing is only done in areas where the space is too narrow for the interdental brush to reach.

Brushing and interdental cleaning are the foundation for achieving high-quality oral hygiene. For this, there are some special types of brushes available in the market - interdental brushes. You can use them especially after eating. When you start cleaning between your teeth, don't be alarmed if your gums bleed. This may happen at first. But if you don't see any improvement in a few days, you should definitely contact your dental professional.

How to use an interdental brush:- First of all, choose an interdental brush of the right size for you. If the space between two teeth is large, choose a wide size and if it is small, choose a narrow size. Gently insert this brush between two teeth. Now move the brush back and forth in this space. Rub it on the surface of the teeth. If necessary, change the size and when its fibers start to come out, change the brush.

Special Note- Some people use a toothpick, safety pin or toothpick to remove food stuck between two teeth, which can prove to be very harmful in the long run. It can increase the gap between two teeth. If you are having difficulty using dental floss, you can use a "water flosser" available in the market. It helps in keeping the teeth and gums clean by releasing a pressurized jet of water on the teeth.

Remember that knowledge is a treasure but its practice is the true capital. By reading my articles you will know the good and the bad but its benefit will be obtained only by implementing the information given. The importance of the advice and treatment given to you by assessing your individual needs and condition is too small to be estimated. The patient must also understand that the doctor is a part of his own team in fighting the disease and cooperation and uniform effort by each team member is essential to win this fight. Every organ of the body wears out with time and is also affected by diseases. This machine like the body also needs maintenance and regular servicing.
